What is a “foray”?
A mushroom foray refers to a collective excursion or outing, typically organized by individuals interested in mycology (the study of fungi), where participants explore natural environments to observe, document, collect, and identify mushrooms.
Hands on learning and experience
A foray is a great experience for novice and expert alike. If you are new to mycology, you have an opportunity to see how amateur mycologists navigate and interact with fungi.
Order of events
Typically, when mushrooms are found, we take photos and environmental information before the specimen is collected. Once collected it is kept in a wax bag until we return to our starting location. Once back, specimens are sorted into categories and the identification process begins.

Table Talk
Almost all forays will conclude with a “Table Talk.” This is where the walk leaders and any experts in the group will select unique and interesting fungi to discuss. This could be information on identification, ecology, habitat or simply mythology, folklore or personal stories.
